چکیده
The etiological agent of glanders, or farcy, was first isolated in pure culture by Loeffler and Schutz in 1892. The genus Malleomyces includes only two speciesMalleomyces mallei and Malleomyces pseudomalci (Bergey et al., 1939). Very few studies have been conducted with M. mallei in the last 25 years since, by the destruction of infected animals detected through mailein skin tests and serum complement fixation tests, the disease has been almost eradicated in most civilized countries from its natural equine hosts. M. pseudomalli (B. whitmori) was identified by Whitmore (1912) as the etiological agent of melioidosis, a disease of man similar to glanders. The wild rat of southeastern Asia is reported to be the natural host, but natural infection has been found in rats, rabbits, cats, and dogs (Stanton and Fletcher, 1932). The purpose of this paper is to present studies on morphology, cultivation, viability, disinfection, and isolation of the organisms from contaminated specimens. 3tudies on virulence and animal susceptibility are reported in the succeeding paper. Reports of studies on comparative serological reactions, chemotherapy, chemical fractions, pathological changes in infected animals, and six human cases of glanders will be reported elsewhere. Eight strains of M. mallei and two strains of M. pseudomallei were used in the studies reported. The source, date of isolation, and reported virulence of each strain are given in table 1.

Identification of Malleomyces by specific bacteriophages.
Malleomyces mallei and Malleomyces pseudomallei are rarely encountered by bacteriologists in this countrv, except in taxonomic studies. Equines are especially susceptible to M. mallei and rodents to M. pseudomallei, but human beings have been known to be infected with either organism, frequently with fatal results (Wilson and Miles, 1955). The causative bacteria cannot always be isolated from p...
متن کاملStaining bacterial smears with fluorescent antibody. II. Rapid detection of varying numbers of Malleomyces pseudomallei in contaminated materials and infected animals.
The identification of pure cultures of Malleomyces pseudomallei in dried smears by use of fluorescent antibody has been described in the previous paper (Moody et al., 1956). The present report describes the application of the method in the detection of these organisms in the presence of other bacteria, in soil, and in animal tissues. The results obtained in this investigation illustrate the pot...
متن کاملEpidemiology of Melioidosis
Melioidosis is one of the few genuinely tropical diseases well established in Southeast Asia and northern Australia. Though highly fatal consequence of septicemic melioidosis reported from tropical and developed countries is appalling, the disease has not attracted the attention that some recently recognized exotic diseases have received. In addition, melioido sis poses no threat to developed ...
متن کاملSpecific staining of various bacteria with a single fluorescent antiglobulin.
Coons and Kaplan (1950) developed a rapid, sensitive, and specific fluorescent antibody technique for staining viruses in tissue sections. They used a direct staining procedure in which a specific fluorescent antibody preparation is applied directly to the cell being studied. In the indirect procedure (Weller and Coons, 1954), the virus is first reacted with a specific nonfluorescent antiserum ...
متن کاملDiagnostic criteria for differentiation of pseudomonads pathogenic for man.
To determine the most useful diagnostic characters for the differentiation of pseudomonads pathogenic for man, including Pseudomonas maltophilia (Alcaligenes bookeri), P. stutzeri (Bacillus denitrificans), P. pseudomallei (Malleomyces pseudomallei), and apyocyanogenic strains of P. aeruginosa, a comparative examination was made of 58 strains of these bacilli for their morphological and biochemi...
